PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot and killed Friday afternoon in Providence.
The shooting took place around 2:30 p.m. on Lenox Avenue. According to police, the 27-year-old victim was sitting in his car outside his home when the suspect approached and opened fire.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, while the gunman got away in a car.
Shell casings could be seen on the ground near the victim’s car which had its driver-side window shattered.
It was the city’s 18th homicide of the year.
Investigators were seen flying a drone over the area.
“The drone gives us a good aerial shot of the area, and all entrances and exits that suspects could have went through, so we’re going to start using that more [during investigations],” Providence Police Maj. David Lapatin explained.
Representatives from the R.I. Attorney General’s office responded to the scene, along with Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza.
“Had an opportunity to spend some time with the mother father and the family and they’re distraught, as you can imagine,” Elorza said. “The senseless violence that we’re seeing throughout the city is just tearing us apart.”
Lapatin believes the shooting was a targeted act.
