PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man accused of causing a deadly crash last year while driving drunk was sentenced to serve at least nine years in prison.

Brian Torres, 26, pleaded no contest last Thursday to charges of driving under the influence, death and personal injury resulting, related to a crash that killed Frank Perry Jr., 28, of Providence last October.

Prosecutors say Torres was under the influence when he stole a landscaping truck, ran a red light and smashed into Perry’s car. Perry was pronounced dead at the scene, and his passenger, Donald Hahn, was seriously injured.

In addition to prison time, Torres will also lose his license for five years, pay a $5,000 fine and attend substance abuse counseling.
