The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is preparing to replace a structurally deficient bridge in East Providence.
One of the I-195 on-ramps from Veterans Memorial Parkway and Warren Avenue will be closed Wednesday as crews work to repair the bridge. The bridge carries the parkway over I-195, then loops around and connects to the Washington Bridge.
RIDOT said the on-ramp will remain closed until the end of 2019.
RIDOT Director Peter Alviti said he knows the closure will be an inconvenience for drivers, but he is asking for patience.
“The improvements, I assure you, will be long-lasting and you’re beginning to see our infrastructure become better, in a better state of good repair, and this is another step in that direction,” he said.
Detours will be identified with signage as soon as the on-ramp is closed. The bridge repair is part of Gov. Gina Raimondo’s “RhodeWorks” initiative.
All schedules and closures are weather-dependent and subject to change.
