PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Fire officials are working to determine what caused an overnight fire at a Providence building that’s home to several businesses.

Crews responded to the area of 163-165 Manton Ave. around 1 a.m. Tuesday and found heavy smoke coming from the building.

Stanley Fallens Jr. lives across the street and said he was woken up by the scene.

“I was up in my living room up there watching TV, half asleep, and I could see the red and blue lights flashing in my living room,” Fallens said. “Where the fire started in that corner hair salon, they were working heavily on that and they set up a ladder truck and firemen went on the roof.”

The fire destroyed Matilda’s Hair Extension and Beauty Supply. A barbershop and hookah bar next door were also damaged.

“I was home sleeping and I got a call that the building was on fire,” said Matilda Paulus, owner of the beauty shop. “I haven’t slept ever since then. I’m just restless.”

Paulus opened the business a few months ago after moving here, but has been working in the beauty industry for more than 20 years. She doesn’t have insurance and said she is unsure of what to do next.

“I really don’t know what to do. That’s the only thing I do for a living. That’s the only job I have,” Paulus said.

GoFundMe pages have been created to raise money for the damaged businesses.

There was no word on any injuries and fire investigators have not yet determined a cause.
