PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Two juveniles in a stolen car caused a three-car crash overnight in Providence, according to police.
Police said the juveniles stole a Kia Soul before and crashed into two other cars on Dexter Street.
The people in the other cars, as well as the two suspects, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Both juveniles were taken into custody, but no word on any charges.
Police believe the theft could be linked to a viral challenge on TikTok.
In a separate incident Monday evening, a North Providence man told 12 News that two young adults came to his house claiming to sell solar panels.
Andrew Tashian said he thought it was an odd interaction and didn’t give it much thought until the next morning.
“North Providence police were at our door saying, ‘Hey, do you know your car got stolen?” he recalled.
According to Tashian, police said his 2014 Kia Soul was stopped by officers in Providence and the suspects jumped out of the vehicle and escaped.
Tashian said the vehicle was damaged and the ignition was stripped, meaning it could be connected to the TikTok challenge.
“I don’t know how that content is allowed to begin with, but it is apparently, and kids are just flocking to it,” Tashian added.
Kia and Hyundai said they’ve worked with local police departments to provide free steering wheel locks over the past few months. They also announced they’ve adjusted the engine mobilizers on new models to prevent these problems in the future.
