BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police say excessive speed was a factor in a weekend crash that claimed the life of a North Carolina man.

Payden Derossi, 23, of Leland, died Saturday following the crash on Douglas Pike, according to Burrillville police.

Police said their initial investigation revealed Derossi was traveling southbound around 4 a.m. and attempted to pass a second vehicle when he lost control, left the roadway and hit several trees.

The vehicle was split into several pieces as a result, according to police.

The crash remains under investigation.
