SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — Officials are investigating after a fire engulfed a home in Smithfield Friday afternoon.

Officials were alerted of the fire around 3 p.m. on Stillwater Road. Smithfield Fire Chief Robert Seltzer said the house burned down within an hour and a half.

Seltzer said when crews arrived on scene, the second floor was completely engulfed. Crews attempted an exterior attack, but they said the flames were too thick.

According to Seltzer, fire departments from North Providence, Johnston and Lincoln all responded to the scene for assistance.

Seltzer said no one was home at the time and there were no injuries as a result of the fire. It’s unclear how many people live inside the home.

According to Seltzer, the home is situated 1,500 feet off of the road, which posed a problem for crews trying to bring hoses up to the fire.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
