SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — Bryant University welcomed its new mascot in a ceremony on Thursday.

President Ronald Machtely and his wife Kati rolled out the red carpet for Tupper II to make his official debut in the Unistructure Rotunda.

The 15-minute reception was the first public appearance for the 12-week-old English bulldog.

Tupper II was bred in Maryland and according to Machtely, he “has all the qualities and traits of the best damn bulldog in the country.”

“When we went out to look for a dog, we wanted to find another bulldog who represented our student body: courageous, polite and lots of love, and this is a dog that I think will do just that,” he said Thursday.

Bryant’s first official bulldog mascot, Ironclad Tupper I, collapsed and died of an apparent stroke late last year.
