JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Five people were hurt in a crash that involved a Rhode Island State Police cruiser Sunday night in Johnston.

State police said the cruiser was struck in the high-speed lane of Route 6 East near the Atwood Avenue exit around 9:20 p.m. It’s believed the trooper was pulling onto the highway, potentially to go after a speeding vehicle, when his cruiser was hit from behind.

Five people, including the trooper, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The trooper has since been released and is now recovering at home, according to state police.

The highway was down to one lane of travel while crews were on scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
