SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — Eyewitness News has learned three athletes from Bryant University are being charged in connection with an altercation that took place on campus over the weekend.
According to Capt. Michael Rheaume, officers were called to the campus Sunday to assist Bryant Public Safety officials in what was reported as a breaking-and-entering and assault that occurred at a townhouse.
Rheaume said the investigation revealed several students entered the townhouse prior to the altercation. Some students were hurt in the incident but the injuries are not life-threatening.
Eyewitness News has now learned three students, who are members of either the basketball or football program, have been charged in the altercation and have been suspended from their respective teams.
Bryant University released a statement in regards to the incident, saying in part, “Due process will be observed and all parties will have an ample opportunity to share their testimony. However, there is no excuse for violence.”
The incident remains under investigation by Smithfield police and Bryant Public Safety.
