Street flooding possible as more downpours, storms move through

East Bay

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — They were quick but powerful.

A line of thunderstorms moved through Southern New England late Wednesday morning, knocking down trees and knocking out power to thousands of people. The WPRI.com Power Outage Database showed as many as 14,000 customers without power in the afternoon, but that number dropped drastically as National Grid crews made the necessary repairs.

The Pinpoint Closing Network showed West Bay Christian Academy in North Kingstown dismissed early for the day due to a power failure.

Additional downpours and thunderstorms are expected overnight into Thursday morning, which could lead to localized street flooding. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 a.m.

West Bay Damage

There were several reports of trees down throughout the area. In Warwick, a tree brought down power lines on Major Potter Road.

The road was closed as National Grid, Verizon and Cox cable crews spent most of the day working to repair the damage.

National Grid reminds people to stay away from downed lines and to immediately call 911.

Across the city, on Tidewater Drive, a tree was split in two – half of it landing on a power line and knocking out power. The other half landed on a car – crushing it.

East Bay & Southeastern Massachusetts

Power was also out in part of Barrington and Swansea. In fact, with gusts measured as high as 60 mph, damage reports stretched from southeast Connecticut to Southeastern Massachusetts

On Warren Avenue in Swansea, five or six utility poles, along with some trees, were downed.

When National Grid arrived, crews immediately shut off power on the stretch of road.

Crews spent a good part of the day removing the trees while new poles were brought in to replace the damaged ones.
