Pedestrian struck, killed in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A man was struck and killed crossing West Main Road in Middletown Wednesday night.  

First responders were called to the area of Carmella’s Pizzaria just after 9:30 p.m., according to police.

They found  48-year-old Robert Ivey lying in the roadway with serious injuries. He was transported to Newport Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say their preliminary investigation indicates that the victim had just stepped off the sidewalk and into the southbound lane of travel when he was struck.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

The accident remains under investigation.  At this time, police say no charges have been filed.
