NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — An empty fuel barge hit a breakwater off Newport early Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Station on Castle Hill.
A 45-foot response boat crew was on the scene in Coddington Cove around 6:45 a.m. after a good Samaritan reported the incident.
Petty Officer Samuel Van Lent said no one was on board the barge owned by Senesco Marine in North Kingstown.
He said the barge likely broke free of lines in the recent stormy weather before traveling across the bay to Newport.
