NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — An annual remembrance of the thousands of U.S. servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Global War on Terror is now on display at Fort Adams State Park in Newport.
The “Boots on the Ground” memorial consists of nearly 7,000 boots with flags and name cards to honor each of the service members killed in action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Operation Stand Down RI, along with hundreds of volunteers, spent hours setting up the boots prior to the memorial’s opening on Friday.
The memorial will be open to the public Friday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. This year, it features a new addition which allows visitors to launch an app that provides unique details about the memorial and the 29 Rhode Island service members who sacrificed their lives for their country.
For the previous three years, the memorial had been on display at Roger Williams Park in Providence.
Operation Stand Down RI will host its 3rd Annual Gold Star Gala at 6:30 p.m. Friday and the 88th Army National Guard Band will play a patriotic concert on Sunday at 7 p.m.
