CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WPRI) — A 65-year-old woman died Wednesday following a house fire in Cumberland.

Town Fire Chief Nicholas Anderson said crews were called to Ryan Avenue just after 10:30 a.m. and arrived to find fire in the rear of the home, which was quickly extinguished.

“Crews were in the middle of town training, so they arrived very quickly from the alarm time,” Anderson said. “We did call in additional resources due to the heat, so we could rehab the firefighters and make sure they’re cared for.”

The woman was the only person inside the home at the time, according to Anderson.

The state fire marshal told 12 News the cause of the fire was smoking while using oxygen.

Anderson said the home sustained smoke damage, but the fire was contained to the room where it started and there was no structural damage.
