WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — A local health center is working to resolve problems with its computer system after officials say it was the target of a “ransomware” attack.

Thundermist Health Center, which is based out of Woonsocket and has offices in South Kingstown and West Warwick, was hit with the attack around 8 a.m. Thursday.

Associated Vice President of Communications and Development Amanda Barney said they took immediate steps to protect patient and employee data.

As of Thursday evening, Barney said there’s no indication that information was compromised in any way.

Thundermist staff were locked out of some of the infected computer systems, according to Barney, and systems that were not affected were locked down to prevent the ransomware from spreading.

As this is being sorted out, Barney said Thundermist is maintaining normal hours of operation with minimal impact to patient care. She said the only appointments that had to be canceled were ones that could not be completed without access to online medical records.

Thundermist is in contact with the Rhode Island Department of Health and Rhode Island State Police about the attack.

Barney said the company is “on the road to recovering the files” and should be operating normally by Friday.
