PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating after a man was shot Tuesday morning in Pawtucket.
The man in his 50s was shot in the upper thigh around 6:15 a.m. on Rhodes Street, according to police. He was conscious and alert when officers arrived on scene and was taken to the hospital.
No word so far on any suspects or motive, but police said the shooting appeared to be random.
Area residents told 12 News they were shocked to hear of gun violence in that part of Pawtucket.
“The neighborhood is wonderful and I love my neighbors and know most of them,” said Mary Burns, who’s lived there for eight years.
Burns did say, however, that she takes additional safety measures at night.
“I’m always aware that I, for my personal safety, for years now do not like going outside in the dark,” she said.
Paul Larivee was working in the area on Tuesday and said there was still a large police presence. He used to live near the scene and said “to find out what happened, it’s crazy.”
“This isn’t a bad part of Pawtucket,” he added. “When I lived here it was quiet, my kids played here at the park, my kids went to school here, and there’s a school right around the corner.”
Police are asking residents who have security cameras to share their video as they seek out suspects.
