PINPOINT STORMBEAT (WPRI) — The heaviest of the snowfall ended Thursday morning but the effects of Wednesday’s storm are still being felt in some areas.

The heavy, wet snow and strong winds caused widespread power outages in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

As of 11 p.m. Thursday, more than 180,000 National Grid customers were still in the dark in Massachusetts and about 2,500 were without power in Rhode Island.

Foster-Glocester has canceled school for Friday. Be sure to check the Pinpoint Closing Network for updates on any other cancellations or delays.

Thursday night will be partly cloudy, with a few light rain or snow showers possible and lows of 25-30 degrees.

While the next few days look mostly dry, the Pinpoint Weather Team is tracking yet another offshore storm that could impact our area early next week.

A Flood Warning continues for our local rivers. The Pawcatuck River in Westerly and the Taunton River in Bridgewater are experiencing minor flooding.

Additional minor flooding is expected through the end of the week. The Pawtuxet River is running high and may approach flood stage later today or tonight.

The Providence Emergency Management Agency sent out a reminder to residents to always take precautions when operating generators in the event of an outage. Proper ventilation of gas generators is essential to preventing carbon monoxide poisoning. Never run a generator inside a house or garage.

Drivers are urged to use caution Thursday morning as roads may be slick and trees or downed power lines could obstruct roadways.

As always, R.I. State Police remind drivers to clear vehicles of any snow before getting on the road.

RIPTA has announced it will delay several routes Thursday due to slippery conditions. Amtrak service between New York and Boston has also been interrupted.

The MBTA is continuing service as usual, but expect delays on the commuter rail as dozens of trees have fallen across the tracks.

Several flights in and out of T.F. Green airport have also been affected. Stay up to date with the Flight Tracker »
