CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) — Police have a suspect in custody after a 27-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday night in Central Falls.

Police responded to the intersection of Dexter Street and Sumner Avenue around 9 p.m. for a report of a shooting.

Investigators say Emmanuel Torres Plaza left work and was walking to his car when he was shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, detectives said they were able to identify a suspect vehicle which was broadcasted to departments throughout New England.

A short time later, the Plainville Police Department responded to a report of a car fire and a witness saw a suspect fleeing from the area.

That suspect, identified as 39-year-old Luis López of Pawtucket, was later detained and identified as the person who set the car on fire.

Police say López had two guns on him, as well as a bulletproof vest and gloves.

It was soon learned that López and Torres Plaza knew each other. Central Falls detectives were then able to get enough information to get an arrest warrant for López.

López remains in custody in Massachusetts and is awaiting extradition. When he is brought back to Rhode Island, police say he will be arraigned on a murder charge.

He will likely face additional charges that are mostly gun-related, police added.

Police say López was recently released from prison after serving 15 years for his role in a 2007 homicide in Foxboro. He faced a charge of manslaughter in that case.
