NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a barn caught on fire in North Smithfield overnight.

Firefighters responding to Phoenix Rising Horse Farm on Pound Hill Road around midnight found heavy fire coming from the back of the barn.

As the fire quickly spread, crews from several surrounding communities arrived to help put out the flames, according to Fire Chief David Chartier.

Tanker trucks were also brought in because there were no nearby hydrants.

“We had water problems because there is no municipal water up here so getting the tankers from other communities here took some time, but we were able to ultimately hold the fire in check and keep it from spreading to exposure buildings on the property,” Chartier explained.

No animals were inside the barn at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

The cause remains unknown.
