2 dead after being struck by scenic train in Wareham

WAREHAM, Mass. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after two people were killed by a Christmas-themed train in Wareham Saturday night.

Police say the incident happened around 7:30 p.m., in the area of 72 Minot Avenue.

The Plymouth County District Attorney’s office said it appears the pedestrians, identified only as a man and a woman, were on the tracks when they were killed. The victims’ names have not been released.

There were more than 300 passengers on board the train at the time, which was coming from Buzzard’s Bay. Police said none of the passengers were injured.

“Thankfully there was no interaction between the passengers in the train with the actual incident,” Acting Police Chief Lieutenant John Walcek said.

Walcek says it appears the crash was an accident, but it is still an active investigation. Massachusetts State Police is assisting in the investigation.
