Local leaders encourage Rhode Islanders to ‘shop small’

NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Members of the Small Business Administration teamed up with local elected officials on Tuesday to encourage Rhode Islanders to think small when shopping this holiday season.

Gov. Gina Raimondo and Congressman David Cicilline were on hand in Newport to announce this year’s “Small Business Saturday,” which is held the day after Black Friday.

“As we look toward the holidays, I want to remind everyone to shop local and support Rhode Island’s small businesses. Not just on Small Business Saturday, but year-round,” said Raimondo. “These businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. Through programs like Commerce RI’s Small Business Assistance Program, we’re investing in their success and making our communities stronger.”

As part of the event, members of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce led attendees on a walking tour of Broadway, visiting multiple small businesses in hopes of encouraging others to do the same in their communities.

More than 95 percent of employers in Rhode Island are small businesses, according to Small Business Administration District Director Mark Hayward.

“These are your friends, your family, and your neighbors,” he said. “And by shopping small, you are sending a message that we support you.”

In collaboration with the Rhode Island Foundation’s Buy Local RI campaign, the Small Business Administration will also be promoting additional shop local events including a “Shop Hop” tour across the state. That runs from Nov. 23 through Dec. 2.
