WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The boys of Warwick North Little League are already in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, preparing for their first game in the Little League World Series.

Back at home in Warwick, their families are preparing to make the trek there. Little League pays all expenses for the boys. But the families have to pay to make the trip, which can be costly.

Several businesses in Warwick are rallying around the team by helping to raise money that will help defray the cost for family members.

The owners of Anchor Seafood Market told Eyewitness News Tuesday that even though they’re a new business, they are still willing to take one for the team and help fundraise.

“Little league does provide for the players and the coaches but their families have to get there for 10 days,” said Warwick North League President David Palumbo. “So all the money is going to help the team’s family get there – their brothers, their sisters, their parents.”

The owners at Anchor say they will donate a portion of this Friday’s sales to the team.

“We’re going to donate all 10-percent of the take-out sales that we do and we’re going to put it towards the families and the kids to offset the expenses,” said co-owner Steven Delgado.

The Cozy Grill and Jersey Mike’s in Warwick are also joining the cause.

The Cozy Grill donated $1,000 and will donate 10% of all Friday sales to the team and Jersey Mike’s is donating 20% sales the same day.

Palumbo said he hopes more local businesses step up to help the team – which also has a GoFundMe page.

“We’re glad to be there but now it’s all business and we’re hoping we can make some noise down there,” he said.

Warwick North – which is representing New England – will play their first game at 3 p.m. on Thursday against the Mid-Atlantic team from New York.
