Lawyer: Teacher charged with sexual assault deserved harsher punishment

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The lawyer hired to investigate a sexual assault case against a Warwick teacher is now pointing fingers at the school department.

According to Vincent Ragosta Jr., the Warwick School Department acted irresponsibly when disciplining Mario Atoyan. Atoyan is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old relative in North Kingstown last summer.

He is currently suspended without pay from his job as a science teacher at Gorton Junior High School.

The lawyer said the district failed because it did not do more to punish Atoyan.
