LaSalette lights up the sky to kick-off the holiday season

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) The LaSalette Shrine is officially lit up for its 63rd season.

Thousands of people got in the Christmas spirit Thursday night as the Festival of Lights kicked off at 5 p.m.

Father Ted Brown, the director of LaSalette, said preparations for the show began in September with about 100 volunteers.

“Not think of yourself, give to others. What happens is we see it with all the volunteers that come,” he said. “They could be at home sipping their egg nog. But where are they? Here.”

The shrine itself is home to about half a million visitors throughout the year. During the holiday season, thousands of them come specifically to see the light show, which displays more than half a million lights throughout the grounds in Attleboro.

Father Brown said his favorite part of the show is seeing the reaction from all the families who visit.

“When you see the looks on the little children and the families and parents… they’re just so happy,” he said. “Especially after this year, people are just looking for something to just lift their spirits, and I think we do it.”

Miguel Santos and his family visited the shrine on Thanksgiving night. He said they have for the past 16 years, but they had a new addition to the group this year — his 11-month-old daughter.

“Well this is the first time my daughter has come over here,” he explained. “We do it for many years with our other kids, so we want to bring my daughter, my little daughter, over here.”

The Santos family joined thousands of other families who walked off their Thanksgiving meals while getting in the Christmas spirit.
