SOMERSET, Mass. (WPRI) — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is alerting drivers that, at times, there will be just one lane of travel open on I-195, eastbound and westbound, in Somerset starting Sunday at 7 p.m.

The closures will begin each night at 7 p.m. and last until 5 a.m., the following day from Sunday through Thursday each week through October 2018. They’ll also occur from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The department of transportation warns that there could be just one lane of travel in each direction at times. They’re advising drivers to allow for extra time due to possible backups.

According to department of transportation, the closures are necessary for cleaning and painting operations beneath the Wilbur Avenue/Route 103 Bridge over I-195. Crews need to close several lanes to allow the large pieces of equipment to work.

The work will start above the highway on the westbound side and then move to the eastbound side.
