ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — A North Attleboro man is facing criminal charges after authorities say he had sex with a 13-year-old girl — his martial arts student at the Attleboro YMCA — several times over the past eight months.
According to court documents, Corey J. Ruel, 40, is charged with five counts of aggravated statutory rape of a child — because he’s more than 10 years older than the girl.
The alleged activity was found out after Ruel confessed to someone because he was concerned the girl might be pregnant.
Officers said when Ruel went to the police station at their request, he admitted to the relationship. In the documents, the victim also told detectives about the activity. “She and Ruel had a conversation about what would happen if they were a couple, and that conversation led to” a kiss between the two of them. That happened on her 13th birthday last year, she told detectives.
The man and the girl had sexual intercourse at the YMCA two or three times in the racquetball courts downstairs, she told detectives. The documents went on to say Ruel and the girl also had encounters at the home he shares with his wife and two children. The girl’s parents reportedly believed she’d been going there to babysit Ruel’s children.
Police identified him as a Tae Kwan do instructor, but the YMCA told the Attleboro Sun Chronicle he is a member of the health club, not a paid staffer, and is no longer allowed on the premises.
Monday, police went to Ruel’s home and seized two firearms registered to him along with ammunition.
A judge ordered Ruel held in jail on $50,000 cash bail Tuesday. The court automatically entered pleas of not guilty on his behalf.
Ruel was ordered to stay away from the girl, local YMCAs and North Attleboro High School, as well as any children 16 or younger — except his own two children.
If Ruel posts bail, he won’t be released until he can be fitted with a GPS tracking bracelet.
The case is due back in court August 16.
