PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The Johnson and Wales baseball squad dropped a 9-3 decision against Scranton at the Ripken Experience on Friday afternoon. It was the second meeting in as many days between the two schools with the teams splitting the season series.
Sophomore Carlos Sanabria (Pawtucket, R.I.) went 3-for-5 in the loss for Johnson & Wales while junior Jordan Pilarski (Garnet Valley, Pa.) was 1-for-1 with a pair of RBI for the Wildcats. Junior Nick Cesino (Scituate, R.I.) suffered the loss on the mound for JWU, allowing seven runs on seven hits in two thirds of an inning of work.
Sophomore Patrick O’Dell (Phoenixville, Pa.) went 3-for-5 with two runs in the victory while freshman Anthony Caladie (Mountain Top, Pa.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Royals. Seniors Michael Villegas (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Dillon Chorba (Pompton Plains, N.J.) combined for three shutout innings of relief, with Villegas earning the win.
Johnson & Wales led 3-1 in the top of the seventh after a two-run single by Pilarski. Scranton scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead, then put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Junior Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J.) and freshman Patrick Mergel (Bethlehem, Pa.) each had two-runs single in the eighth inning to lead Scranton to the 9-3 victory.
With the loss Johnson & Wales drops to 2-2 for the year while Scranton is 1-2 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, March 7th when they take on Muhlenberg at the Ripken Experience.
