SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — Police officers in Smithfield are thanking a local jeweler for a donation of silicone rings, which are a safer alternative to wearing wedding bands while out in the field.

Matt Doumato of Ephraim Doumato Jewelers donated several sizes of the rings, according to Smithfield police.

Police said wedding rings can “get caught or hung up on vehicles, machinery, branches, fences, etc., causing career ending injuries.”

The rings are popular among a variety of professions that involve working with one’s hands on a regular basis.
