Jeffrey Osborne announces return of teen singing competition

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — R&B legend and Rhode Island native Jeffrey Osborne has announced the return of his Hand Me the Mic talent search competition.

Local youth ages 13-19 are called to audition for a chance to win the $10,000 grand prize.

The Hand Me the Mic competition is part of the 8th Annual Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic golf tournament that is also marking its return to Rhode Island this summer. The tournament’s mission is to benefit organizations that support music and the arts for children and families, as well as safe-haven providers for families in need.

Since the Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic was launched, it has raised more than $1 million for Rhode Island nonprofits, according to tournament officials.

Where: Warwick Mall – Center Stage – Warwick, R.I.

Competition Rounds:

  • April 27: First Round – 1 p.m.

  • May 18: Second Round – 1 p.m.

  • June 22: Third Round – 1 p.m.

  • July 20: Semi-finals – 1 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up to compete?

Two Ways:

  • Send an audition video to (video must be 3 minutes or less) for the opportunity to be pre-selected to compete in one of the three rounds.

  • Audition in person. There will be open auditions for ONE HOUR at the start of the three rounds.

                 (3 minutes per singer | maximum) 

                  Competition Dates for Rounds One – Three:

  • Round One April 27

  • Round Two May 18

  • Round Three June 22

  • Semi-finals July 20

These Rounds are at the Warwick Mall.

  • Open audition participants will be selected on a first come, first served basis (pending suitability of content for public performance, and the desired length of the show.) A maximum of 10 contestants will be chosen to be in that round to compete with the 10 contestants pre-selected from the audition videos sent in to the JOCC team.

  • Twenty contestants will compete that day for three spots in the semifinals. Twenty contestants will sing and ten contestants will be chosen to continue to compete that day. The ten contestants chosen will sing and the top three contestants will be selected to go on to the semi-finals (this is the format for all three rounds.) The third round will have top four contestants with the audience picking the fourth contestant.

Who is eligible?

  • This contest is open to persons 13 -19 years of age. Any members of the JOCC, employees of Warwick Mall and their immediate family members are not permitted to participate. None of the judges’ immediate family may participate. Contestants under the age of 18 years old may only participate so with the consent of their parent or guardian who must evidence such consent on the application form.

  • Contestants must be amateur singers or entertainers, otherwise be persons who may be involved within the entertainment industry as singers or entertainers on a part-time basis, and do not belong to any professional organization (s) connected with the entertainment industry.
