Jackknifed tractor-trailer ties up traffic in East Providence

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A jackknifed tractor-trailer has snarled traffic on 195 in East Providence Saturday.

The crash happened at about 11:30 a.m. between Exits 5 and 6 on 195 East.

The truck jackknifed and the cab jumped the median barrier, partially blocking a lane on the eastbound side of the highway. Lanes on both sides of the highway had to be closed for more than three hours, as crews worked to remove the truck.

According to a State Police press release, Captain Matthew Moynihan said the truck, driven by 39-year-old Ababacar Diouf of Pawtucket, was headed west when it struck the median, just west of the George Washington Bridge. The driver sustained minor injuries and was brought to a local hospital to be treated.

Captain Moynihan said a car heading eastbound was struck by the truck as it came over the barrier, but the car sustained only minor damage and the driver was not injured.

State Police advised drivers to avoid the area until the wreck was cleared, which took several hours.

Rhode Island State Police closed all but one lane of travel on each side, while crews worked to remove the truck and clean a fuel and oil spill. All lanes traveling eastbound we reopened around 2:30 p.m. and after the truck had been removed, all of the westbound lanes reopened by 3:15 p.m.

The truck is registered to J. Anthony Express of Maine, which has a local address in Seekonk.

Rhode Island State Police were assisted by East Providence Police and Fire, and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
