Boy who spotted Hasbro Children's Hospital fire celebrated by lawmakers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The 7-year-old boy who spotted a fire at Hasbro Children’s Hospital earlier this month was given a standing ovation at the State House Thursday night prior to the start of session.

Angel Jimenez was visiting his little brother, who is a patient at the hospital, when he looked out the window and saw the flames. Jimenez pointed it out to his mother, who in turn told staff members at the hospital.

Jimenez, who was dressed in a tuxedo, smiled as lawmakers cheered for him. He was then invited up to the podium to meet House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello.

“I heard about you on the news and I was very impressed,” Mattiello told Jimenez.

Mattiello then lifted Jimenez up to the microphone so he could say “hello” to the room, which erupted into applause for a second time.

Jimenez told Eyewitness News he wants to be a firefighter when he grows up.
