WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — A man and a baby were transported to the hospital Thursday night following a crash in West Warwick.
The fire department responded to the area of 1542 Main Street some time after 7 p.m. They said the man was driving down Church Street in a pickup truck when it crashed into the side of Smith’s Tax Service and careened into a utility van.
The crash knocked the building off its foundation, and caused the van to fall on top of another van parked below.
According to the fire department, the man told them he had fallen asleep at the wheel prior to the crash.
“I didn’t know what was going on. Poor baby was in the car and I didn’t know if he was okay or not,” said Lonnie Conway, an eyewitness.
“There’s a lot of structural damage right there. That whole side of that building is probably going to have to be torn down,” said another eyewitness, Paul Long.
Crews were seen working on the foundation of the building after the scene was cleared.
The conditions of the victims are not yet known.
