BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WPRI) — Instead of a public comment hearing Monday evening, the state board overseeing the controversial Clear River Energy Center natural gas power plant proposal rescheduled for an open meeting Monday afternoon, and also rescheduled a meeting set for October 13.

In a posting on the town of Burrillville’s website Thursday, the Energy Facility Siting Board of the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission canceled the public comment hearing that had been set for Monday, October 3, at 6 p.m. at Burrillville High School. Instead, the Board scheduled an open meeting Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the offices of the Public Utilities Commission on Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick. While the meeting was open, public comment would not be taken.

Furthermore, the hearing set for October 13 at 9 a.m. at the PUC building would be canceled in favor of a hearing at 12 p.m. on October 13 where oral arguments will be taken on motions before the board.

On September 22, Burrillville’s Town Council voted at a special meeting to oppose the Clear River Energy proposal, citing not just residents against it but also extensive reports from consultants that indicate the power plant would have a negative impact.

Invenergy, the company hoping to build the plant, says it will create 300 jobs and bring in tax revenue to the town. Gov. Gina Raimondo is also in favor of the plant.

The state Siting Board has the final say on whether the project can go forward.
