Governor Chafee’s portrait installed at State House

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The official portrait of former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee has been installed at the State House.

The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts says the portrait was installed on the third floor of the State House by a team from the Department of Administration.

Chafee’s portrait is unlike his predecessors’ portraits. He looks to the side, pensively. The background is blank space and his left hand rests on a rock.

Most governors are pictured in their office, looking straight ahead and surrounded by the accoutrements of the job.

Chafee was governor from 2011 to 2014. He didn’t attend the unveiling of the portrait in January.

The $15,000 project was commissioned by the state last year. Julie Gearan, of Providence, painted the portrait.
