EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Four people had to be hospitalized after a car ran a stop sign in East Providence, striking another vehicle head-on.

East Providence Police got the call around 4:30 p.m. Saturday for a two car crash at the intersection of Purchase Street and Freeborn Avenue.

According to police, the head-on collision happened after the driver of the first vehicle traveling on Purchase Street didn’t see a stop sign and drove through it, crashing into the second vehicle on Freeborn Avenue, and driving partly down an embankment leading to I-195 West.

East Providence Police and Fire officials say four people were transported to the hospital with neck, back, and chest pain related to the crash. All of their injuries were non-life threatening. The remaining passengers involved in the crash refused medical treatment.

Eyewitness News on scene identified the two vehicles involved as an SUV and a Sedan. Both cars were towed from the scene within an hour of the crash.

One driving citation was issued for the driver of the vehicle which ran the stop sign.
