Former Dartmouth PD Chief dies after battle with cancer

DARTMOUTH, MASS. (WPRI) – The Dartmouth Police Department say one of their own, former Chief Stephen J. Soares of Westport, passed away Thursday at 70 after a battle with cancer.

Chief Soares died Chistmas Eve, Thursday, December 24th at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

He is survived by his wife, four children, five grandchildren, as well as his mother and brother.

Chief Soares began his long career in law enforcement as a police officer for the Dartmouth Police Department in 1967. He served as police chief from 1983 through his retirement from that force in 2000.

Chief Soares then moved to Norwich, Vermont where he served as police chief until 2004. He became police chief in Windsor, Vermont until his retirement last year.

He was known for his work as a canine officer and an avid supporter of the D.A.R.E. program, as well as an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 10 am in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Tuesday 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital , P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.
