First axe bar in RI opens in Lincoln

LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island’s first ever axe bar officially opened in Lincoln Friday.

AXE Bar is located on Higginson Avenue inside R1 Indoor Karting. The axe-throwing bar joins lazer tag, paintball, rock climbing and other activities inside the 90,000 square foot entertainment complex.

According to the AXE Bar website, anyone 16 years or older can participate. There are 10 lanes inside the bar, which can accomodate up to 60 people. Participants must wear close-toed shoes.

Axe throwing is a competition where players throw an axe at a marked target. Similar to darts, those whose axe landes closest to the center can get a “bullseye.”

The website says the sport is done under the watchful eye of a trained throwing coach, who shows participants how to safetly handle an axe while throwing it.

AXE Bar also enforces stresses the importance of safety, saying only two people are allowed to be in a throwing area at one time. Everyone else must wait in the safety zones behind the lanes.

“Safety is our number one priority,” the bar says on its website. “There are more than 200 venues already in the United States and we have talked to numerous operators about safety.”

The bar also offers food and beverages and is open seven days a week:

  • Monday-Thursday: 5-10 p.m.
  • Friday: 5 p.m. to midnight
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to midnight
  • Sunday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
