SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — Fire officials are investigating after flames broke out inside a Smithfield home overnight, causing serious damage.
The fire started at about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday on Rosewood Drive. Officials said the flames sparked up inside the kitchen of an in-law apartment within the house.
Firefighters quickly responded to the scene and helped get a disabled woman to safety.
The main house sustained smoke damage while the apartment was completely gutted by the fire.
No injuries were reported.
The Red Cross is now assisting six residents with basic living needs.
The cause remains under investigation, but fire officials believe it to be accidental.
