PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) – Firefighters were faced with challenges when responding to a house fire on Prudence Island Monday.

The Portsmouth Fire Department was called to the home on Holbrook Road just after 5 p.m. after a caller reported flames in a space between the first and second floor.

Firefighters from the Prudence Fire Volunteer Fire Department also responded. They sent an engine and also tried to access the home by water, but their vessel became stuck in ice at the East Passage Yachting Center. Firefighters from Portsmouth were able to break the ice and the U.S. Coast Guard was dispatched to the area in case additional firefighters were needed.

Firefighters stayed on scene until about 7:30 p.m. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Officials say the home was damaged but it can be repaired.
