TIVERTON, R.I. (WPRI) — If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be representing the Tiverton Fire Department or its retirees – hang up, the department said Thursday.

The department has received reports that fraudsters are calling residents and local telephone numbers trying to appeal to the good nature of victims, claiming to be raising money for the “Tiverton Fire Department Retirees.”

The department said it isn’t collecting by phone solicitation, nor is the firefighters’ union, Local 1703 IAFF, or any retired firefighters either.

Don’t engage these people, Chief Robert Lloyd advised, because they’re just trying to take your money.

If you are further concerned by a phone call, you can report it to your local police department or the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Division at (401) 274-4400.
