FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WPRI) — The Fairhaven Fire Department responded to a fire aboard a 255-foot ferry on Sunday afternoon.

The 911 call came in around 2:18 p.m. from the Steamship Authority Repair Facility at 14 Main Street in Fairhaven.

According to the fire department, the ship named “Island Home” was docked for routine repairs when a fire broke out in the Emergency Generator Room on Deck 3. Workers aboard fought the flames using a CO2 extinguisher.

Fire crews then spent an hour on scene containing and extinguishing the fire.

According to a news release, the fire is believed to have started in electrical wiring that supplies the generator.

No passengers were on board at the time and no injuries were reported.

The Fairhaven Harbormaster, as well as members of the U.S. Coast Guard and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, were all notified of the incident.
