FBI arrests man at Warwick home connected to terror investigation

News

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) – Authorities have arrested a suspect in Warwick in connection with an ongoing terror investigation in Boston, the Target 12 Investigators have learned.

Nicholas Rovinski, 24, was arrested Thursday by the FBI at a home on Aspinet Drive.

Kristen Setera, a spokesperson for the Boston office of the FBI, said Rovinski was taken into custody without incident at 8:16 p.m.

Rovinski will appear in Boston’s federal court Friday at 2 p.m. Charges will be announced after they are filed in the morning, Christina Sterling of the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Rovinski’s home was searched by state and federal authorities last week and has remained under police watch since then. Target 12 has confirmed the search was connected to an investigation into an alleged terrorist plot to behead police officers.

At the time the FBI would only say the search was part of “court-authorized activity” and was being conducted by members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

According to a complaint unsealed last week, Usaamah Rahim, David Wright and an unnamed third person met at a beach in Rhode Island “in inclement weather, to discuss their plans” on Sunday.

The beach is just a short distance from the Aspinet Drive home that the FBI said was the subject of court-authorized activity.

In the complaint filed against Wright, investigators said Rahim, 26, bought several military fighting knives on Amazon.com for the purpose of beheading police officers. The documents said investigators believed the attack was imminent, either June 2 or June 3.

Rahim was gunned down by Boston police and the FBI last week after authorities say he lunged at them with a knife. We will have more on this breaking story tomorrow on Eyewitness News This Morning, starting at 4:30 a.m.
