FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A weeks-long investigation into alleged firearm and drug activity in Fall River resulted in a pair of arrests on Tuesday.
Jorge Colon-Ortiz, 20, of Fall River, and a 17-year-old male were scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on several charges.
According to police, the city’s gang unit developed information that illegal guns were being stashed at homes on Ferry and Orswell Streets. While conducting undercover surveillance, police said they witnessed Colon-Ortiz meeting with an unidentified man for what was believed to be a drug transaction outside 370 Ferry St.
Colon-Ortiz and the juvenile suspect were then seen entering a vehicle and leaving the area.
With assistance from members of the Special Operations Division and the Southeastern Massachusetts FBI Gang Task Force, police pulled over the vehicle and executed search warrants at the two locations.
Inside the vehicle, investigators found a loaded handgun on the floor in the back seat, along with 26 Xanax pills, 8.8 grams of marijuana, and digital scales, according to police.
Police said they seized 19.2 grams of marijuana, a scale, and packaging materials from the Ferry Street residence, as well as a replica pellet handgun that was found hidden in a drop ceiling. They also seized another pellet gun from 8 Orswell St. and a total of $1,925 in suspected proceeds from illegal drug sales.
Colon-Ortiz and the juvenile suspect were charged with carrying/possessing a non-large-capacity firearm in public, carrying a loaded firearm in public without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and possession with intent to distribute a Class D substance.
Colon-Ortiz also faces charges of possession with intent to distribute a Class C substance and violating firearm law with three prior violent or drug crime convictions.
