Elorza encourages shoppers to participate in Small Business Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Right after finishing the turkey, many Americans will head out on Thanksgiving to get a jump start on Black Friday shopping.

In Rhode Island and Massachusetts though, laws prohibit stores from opening before Friday but nothing is stopping shoppers from getting in line Thursday night.

Black Friday isn’t the only shopping opportunity this upcoming weekend.

Saturday is known as Small Business Saturday.

“Let’s put aside these national chains instead promote preserve support our local economy,” said Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza.

The mayor announced drivers many streets in Providence will have two free hours of parking all the way until New Year.

“I hope everyone will take the time this Saturday and throughout the holiday season to keep this ‘buy local spirit’ alive.”

Maine also keeps retailers closed on Thanksgiving along with Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
