WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — A man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries following a crash on Elmwood Avenue in Warwick.
According to police, the man’s sedan collided head-on with a private sanitation truck around 8:15 a.m. in the area of Second Avenue. Police said the initial investigation revealed the sedan was driving northbound on Elmwood Avenue when it crossed into the southbound lanes, hit the truck’s driver-side bumper and was spun around, coming to a stop in the northbound lanes.
The sedan driver was trapped in the vehicle as a result, according to police, and it took emergency crews more than 45 minutes to get him free. He was then taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries to his legs.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police said they’re looking into whether speed or distracted driving were possible factors.
Criminal charges are not being sought by police at this time but they said civil violations are pending the outcome of the investigation.
