Driver charged with OUI in serious Somerset crash

SOMERSET, Mass. (WPRI) – The driver of the car which ran a red light in Somerset Friday night, crashing under a big rig, has been charged with OUI among other charges.

Somerset Police Chief George McNeil says 30-year-old Matthew Leonardo of Somerset has been charged with OUI, three counts of reckless endangerment of a child, operating to endanger, and a red light violation.

Leonardo admitted to police he used a “speedball” of heroin and cocaine in the car just a couple of hours before the crash. He will be taken into police custody once he is released from the hospital.

Leonardo’s six-year-old daughter was also in the car when he crashed. She did not suffer any injuries.

The driver of the tractor trailer was also uninjured. He spoke with Eyewitness News shortly after the crash.

Witnesses and police told Eyewitness News on scene Friday night it was nothing short of a miracle Leonardo and his daughter walked away from this serious crash.
