BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) — Authorities are working to determine what caused a single-car accident in Bristol Thursday evening.

Witnesses said the crash happened around 6 p.m. on Metacom Avenue.

Eyewitness News has learned that Deputy Fire Chief Frank Sousa, 50, was involved in the fatal wreck.

According to police, the vehicle was traveling westbound on Sowams Road when the car crossed over several lanes before smashing into a metal fence.

Sousa was off-duty at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead after being taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

At this time, no further details have been released on what caused his death.

The crash is currently under investigation.
