NEWPORT, R.I (WPRI) — It’s out with the old, in with the new in Newport.
This week, crews began tearing down a two-story building on America’s Cup Avenue to make way for construction of a new boutique hotel.
Project leaders say The Brenton Hotel will be complete by Spring 2020.
The hotel will have 57 rooms for guests, in a five-story structure along the waterfront on the corner of America’s Cup Ave. and Long Wharf, adjacent to the Newport Visitor Information Center and the Newport Marriott Hotel.
Guest parking will be located on the ground floor.
Project leaders say the concept is to build an upscale property, but also keeping in tune with downtown Newport’s historic charm.
“We obviously wanted to respect the heritage and the history of Newport, but also bring something that’s a little more progressive, so I think it brings the best of both traditional architecture and a progressive new look to it that we not only think will be an icon new Newport, but will really excite our guests,” said Dan Paquette of investment group LWH, LLC.
In addition to construction jobs for the next 14 months, Jeff Farrar, managing partner of LWH, LLC says the hotel will also create about 40 to 50 full-time jobs once the hotel is complete.
“I’ve watched Newport develop over the years into a tremendous four season, year-round resort area, and we really feel like we’re gonna contribute to that continuing and we really hope that we can have a positive impact in Newport going forward,” Farrar said.
