FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) – A 24-year old Fall River man, accused of going on a violent rampage against his girlfriend and a neighbor with a hammer last summer, pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court on Tuesday.

Mario Ramos was sentenced to 10 to 12 years behind bars, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office. He faced multiple charges including home invasion, strangulation, intimidation of a witness, assault and battery, and two counts of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Following Ramos’ sentence, he will also have 10 years of supervised probation, the DA said.

On July 13, 2015, the DA’s office said Fall River Police found a chaotic scene outside the apartment complex at 378 3rd Street. Several people inside were hurt inside the apartment, including the pregnant victim, who had been dating Ramos for a few months.

She sustained bruising and lacerations, officials said. The neighbor who was also hurt suffered a fractured shoulder and rib.

Ramos did not have a criminal record in Massachusetts prior to this incident, but he was charged in Puerto Rico in 2011 for attacking his brother with a hammer.

“This is another example of pure inhumane brutality. It is discouraging that this defendant was just 22 years old when this occurred,” District Attorney Thomas Quinn III said. “He very simply needs to be locked up for a very long time.”
